Watchman's Box 12/06/50

GV II*

Watchman's box. c1810. Possibly to designs of John Palmer, thought to be architect to Norfolk Crescent (qv). MATERIALS: Limestone ashlar, including roof. EXTERIOR: Small circular sentry-box with doors, set to corner of triangular green to west of the Crescent. Plain cylinder with four pilasters to moulded capitals carrying entablature, with eight plain raised paterae to frieze and moulded cornice below flat conical dome in two steps. No bases are visible, probably concealed by rise in pavement and ground level. Facing north, towards street crossing on approaches to Crescent worn plank door, retaining one strap hinge, other missing (June 1994). HISTORY: This is a very rare survival of this building type, revealing a high level of architectural finish. It was restored in the 1890s.
