NESTON

SJ2977 PARKGATE ROAD, Neston Town 794-1/6/76 (North side) Nos.4, 6 AND 6A Old Bank House and attached gateway at left

GV II

Town house with gateway attached, now a pair of lock-up shops with flat. Dated 1703, with C19 and C20 alterations. Whitened roughcast with timber shop fronts and painted flush quoins; slate roof with coped gables and end stacks. Gateway of rusticated red sandstone. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 4-bay front on high stone plinth. Gateway arch to left gives access to flat at No.6A. No.4 has plain pilastered shop front with broad fascia and cornice: No.6 has smaller window and 4-panel bolection moulded door beneath rectangular overlight. Recessed sashes with stone sills and glazing bars at first floor level and two smaller sashes at attic level in gabled dormers with copings. Left gable end has projecting bands at first floor and eaves levels. Right gable end has a tablet set in the gable end, now visible in No.2 Parkgate Road (qv), has the initials S.G.I. and date 1703. Gateway arch has shouldered head and flat lintel. INTERIOR: No.6A has cottage staircase based on winders: 2-panel doors and wide board doors. Old 4-panel door, exposed beams, exposed purlins in attic.
