ST5445 MARKET PLACE 662-1/7/163 (East side) 12/11/53 The Bishop's Eye

GV I

Gatehouse tower. c1451, built by Bishop Bekynton at a cost of ยป133.6.8. Doulting stone ashlar, copper flat roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys, single bay. West elevation to market place flanked by two turrets, rectangular with corners chamfered plinth, moulded string over doorway and below parapet. 4-centred gateway arches, with pair timber gates on west side possibly C18, the entrance grooved and vaulted, above the elevation panelled into 5 bays, with statue niches flanking 2-light flat headed traceried windows, between which is a larger canopied statue niche at first-floor level, band of armorial shields below first-floor windows, rear elevation similar, featuring a carved episcopal rebus. INTERIOR: not inspected. This gateway noticeably grander than that to the Cathedral Green. External stonework cleaned 1992/3.
