TQ3103NE MARINE PARADE 577-1/47/435 (North side) 20/08/71 Nos.39 AND 40 and attached railings

Terraced houses. Early C19, reworked in the mid C19. Brick in Flemish bond and stucco; roof obscured by parapet. 4 storeys over basement; 4-window range, 3-window range in right return. Paired, flat arched entries with overlights. Lintel of No.40 bears legend: "Lennox House". Fragment of original porch to No.39, a Tuscan column and impost block. Banded rustication to ground floor of both, to basement of No.39 only. Balcony to first floor a continuation of that on No.38 (qv); supported by cast-iron brackets on No.39 and by thin cast-iron colonnettes on No.40, which carries a plate glass, late C20 verandah. Identical cast-iron railings to both balconies. To left of entry of No.39 is full-height segmental bay with tripartite windows of original design. Full-height canted bay to the right of entry to No.40 reworked in mid C19; tripartite windows of this period to basement and first and third floors. All windows flat arched, 2 on No.40 have lintels of gauged brick. Entablature and parapet to Marine Parade elevation only. INTERIOR: not inspected. Railings to stairs and basement areas.
