GV II*

Block of private flats. 1934-36. By Wells Coates. Built of concrete finished with plaster, flat roof presumably also of concrete. EXTERIOR/PLAN: 12 storeys; the block is L-shaped with a curved corner to King's Road and Western Street and the principal feature is the 'balconies' on the first to 8th floors which run the length of the building in Western Street and almost the full length in King's Road, forming strong horizontal bands. The glazing of the flats is almost continuous, and the plan brings part of the flat forward to form bays flush with the parapet and then back to form a balcony proper, except in the case of the last 2 flats in Western Street; internally these projecting parts were 'sun-rooms' and were advertised as 'sun-admitting Vita-Glass Sun Parlours'. The glazing is of metal, rectilinear, and on the corner bay and the first 3 in Western Street the outer windows of each bay are slightly canted back from the parapet, in plan. The 9th, 10th and 11th floors are progressively set back and have no window bays; the 11th floor is set back under a deep canopy. Principal entrance in King's Road with deep buttressed cantilevered canopy; secondary entrance in Western Street. The rear elevation has balconies serving tradesmen's entrances on all floors which are ramped at either end to accommodate the external staircases; and there is an enclosed lift-shaft in the centre of the Western Street wing.
