II

Terraced houses. Late C18. Painted brick in Flemish bond, except for Nos 8, 9 and 16 which are faced with stucco; all roofs of tile. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys with dormers above basement, No.17 three storeys with dormers above basement. One window each. Entrance to No.17 round-arched with decorative fanlight, overlight at Nos 10 and 11. The rest of the entrances are flat-arched, those at Nos 9, 12, 13 and 18 with canopies on brackets; console brackets to canopies on Nos 10, 13, 15 and 16. A very elaborate, carved wood door surround at No.11 may date to the C18, but was very likely inserted in the C20: it consists of fluted pilasters with lion head capitals and a rich entablature of the Corinthian order; egg-and-dart cornices, a cyma recta carved with pointed leaves and acanthus modillions. To the left of this entrance is a through-passage with an iron gate. There are full-height bays to Nos 8-18, those on Nos 12-14 segmental, the rest canted. Canted bay to ground floor only of No.19. Brick dentil cornice to Nos 10, 11, 13, and 18. Flat-arched dormers to Nos 8-16 and 19: dormer on No.8 takes up full width of the house, that on No.9 treated as a rounded bay with leaded lights. The roof of No.18 is currently being replaced. Stacks to party walls. INTERIOR: not inspected. (Carder T: The Encyclopaedia of Brighton: Lewes: 1990-).
