The Cottage
II
Cottage, now shops and offices. Late C18, with late C19 or
early C20 additions. Flints in pitch with painted brick
dressings; the return is rendered in stucco scored to imitate
ashlaring. Gambrel roof of tile.
2 storeys over basement. 3-window range. Stack to end wall.
Just to the left of the centre of the main elevation is a
segmental-arched entrance with brick quoin surrounds. All
windows have similar surrounds. There is a full-height brick
quoin strip to the corner. To either side of the entrance is a
window, the head of each obscured. That on the left is
narrower than that on the right. First-floor windows are flat
arched and aligned with those below; the window in the
entrance range is blocked. A brick dentil cornice is
interrupted by first-floor window lintels. The roof has 2
flat-arched dormers. In the late C19 or early C20, a timber
porch with lean-to tile roof was added to the ground floor.
Bay windows were put in the ground-floor windows: that to the
left triangular in plan and that to the right rectangular.
INTERIOR: not inspected.
