Church. 1769 by Robert Adam. Gault brick, stone dressings. Said to have
cement tile roof. Tetrastyle prostyle temple form. Stylobate of 3 steps
to portico with 4 rendered Doric columns to west 2 bays deep. Columns
with rosettes to the necking; plain architrave, 4 rosettes to the frieze,
brick dentils to cornice. Pediment with dentils. West wall rendered.
Moulded plinth cap. Central stone door surround with plain cornice on
consoles. 2 doors each of 4 panels. To either side a square-headed window
with leaded lights radiating beneath semi-circular glazing bar; moulded
band at sill level and to either side of cornice of doorway; above all 3
openings a blank square, recessed panel. Coved roof to porch, central flat
ceiling raised and rectangular moulded panel. South elevation of 4 bays,
stone base; plinth; string course at sill level of 4 plain semi-circular
headed niches; moulded string course cut by 3 square headed windows under
rubbed and gauged brick arches with similar glazing to west. Plain
architrave; rosettes to frieze; dentils to cornice. East elevation has
stone base; plinth; platband; 3 blank rectangular panels under rubbed and
gauged arches; central panel has repositioned memorial tablet of 1665
with broken pediment with achievement, shouldered architrave and apron with
scroll. Moulded string course; 3 square blank recessed panels; entablature
as south elevation with 4 rosettes to frieze; pediment with oculus. North
elevation as south but rectangular recesses. Interior. Circular entrance
lobby. 8 panel doors, raised and fielded, top 2 panels glazed, to left
and right. That to right leads to stair with turned balusters; ramped
handrail. Double door to church of 4 raised and fielded panels each. Stone
floor with black diamond-shaped insets. Step at east end then 2 curved
steps to altar. Panelled oak reredos with fluted Corinthian engaged columns
and antae at angles; gilded capitals with swags. Central panel of reredos
has painting of Virgin and child with other figures. Pews with wrought
iron candle holders. At west end 2 box pews, slightly raised with brass
gas lamps. West wall oak panelled; west door surround has foliar trail
on the fascia, consoles supporting cornice with egg-and-dart. Festoon over.
Fluted pilasters with gilded capitals support gallery with fluted balusters.
Ornate moulded plasterwork to wall. Ceiling with oval panel, guilloche
and central rose. Hatchments to north and south and west walls.
