BLANCHLAND THE SQUARE Blanchland NY 9650 24/34 House adjacent to Abbey Gatehouse (formerly 1.5.4.69 listed as House to west of Post Office.

GV 1

House, formerly monastic outer court building, possibly almonry. Probably C13, heightened late Clslearly C16; outshut to rear mid-C18. Rubble, 2nd floor large squared blocks in irregular courses; stone slate roof. South elevation 3 storeys, 3 narrow bays. 6-panel door with 2-pane overlight in bay 1, paired late C19 sashes to right, that in bay 3 under earlier keyed segmental arch. Small 4-pane sashes to 1st floor, the central set in former doorway with cut-back shouldered arch. 2nd floor has 3-light mullioned window with hoodmould and small window to right, pent-roofed garderobe projection to left. Low-pitched roof with coped left gable, stone stack on rear slope. Rear elevation: blocked doorways; windows include a 9-pane sash in stone surround. Interior: First-floor room, extending above Post Office, has C15 fireplace with chamfered monolithic lintel carried on shaped corbels; lintel retains remains of painted black-letter inscription. Blocked door on west has chamfered jambs and cut-back shouldered head. 2nd floor room shows chamfered doorway to former garderobe, now cupboard, and 2 C15/16 roof trusses: chamfered cambered ties support heavy square-set ridge and trenched purlins.
