10/254 Whiteley House and Hospital

Hospital. Circa 1912 by Sir Reginald 31omfield. Red brick below, grey stock brick with red brick above, plain tiled roofs with tiled eaves. 3 small ridge stacks and 8 tall front stacks with polygonal ends articulating the facade. 2 storeys, 9 bays ABCCDCCBA with projecting gable front wings to ends. Glazing bar sash windows to first floor, 2 across each end wing under stone cornice hoods, 13 across the centre range. Recessed central paired panelled and half-glazed doors to centre. Red brick pier surround with stone ground to recess, moulded brick band above. Gabled stone niches above and between first floor windows in end quoins containing female figures that on the left carrying an anchor,the one to the right a heart. Iron lantern on horizontal scroll-work bracket. 3 storey block set back to left with connecting corridor Red and grey brick with quoined ends and central stacks. Projecting oriel type window on first and second floors under tent roof, glazing bar sash windows to outer bays. Quoined 2-step brick surround to central door in corridor. Right hand return front of main block. Rusticated end piers, former open balcony on first floor, now glazed, on 4 rendered panelled piers. C20 flat roofed single storey extensions to rear. Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty old folk, laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing leading architects of the day.
