Parish church. C12, early C13, late C13, C14, C15, C19. Ashlar, coursed limestone rubble, lead roofs. Western tower, nave with clerestory, aisles, chancel, south porch, vestry. 2 stage early C13 tower, having clasping angle buttresses, figured corbel table, lead roof with weather vane. To the belfry stage are paired lancets with mid wall shafts and round arches over. The west wall has 2 lancets. In the north aisle 3 C15 3 light windows with panel traceried heads. Pointed arches and 3 contemporary 2 light clerestory windows. C19 vestry at east end of aisle, gabled with 2 light window. C12 chancel with single round-headed light and fragment of corbel table. C19 3 light east window. On the south side a round headed doorway and 2 lights. The east wall of the south aisle has a 3 light C14 window with cusped heads and in the south wall 2 and 3 light C15 windows. Clerestory matches that to north. Gabled, late C13, south porch having pointed double chamfered outer arch with foliated capitals, octagonal reveals, human head label stops, contemporary open work cross to coped gable and an ashlar roof, with side benches to porch. Triangular headed double chamfered inner door with moulded hood. Behind a C19 pierced wooden screen is the original C14 planked door with contemporary iron closing ring with pierced decorative plate and ring depicting St.Stephen with lizards whispering in his ears. Interior. C15 3 bay nave arcades with facetted shafts having bell moulded bases and engaged angle shafts with embattled octagonal capitals and double chamfered arches. Early C13 tower arch with facetted reveals, moulded imposts and a facet, a chamfer and square orders over. Remarkable C19 tierceron vault ogee wooden roof with moulded ribs springing from wall shafts with C19 capitals. In the south aisle a C13 chamfered and painted piscina. C15 moulded chancel arch and hood. In the chancel north wall a double chamfered C14 archway with engaged shaft and foliate capitals, and in the north wall a triangular headed aumbry. C19 tiled reredos and Baroque altar rails. All fittings are C19 including stone panelled pulpit and reading desk, apart from the plain octagonal font which was also recut then. Monuments. In the wall of the vestry a C13 quatrefoil with dogtoothing, shield and hands clasping a heart. In the sanctuary a C14 effigy of a knight with chain mail and surcoat, feet resting on a lion. In the south aisle an unusual early C14 double effigy of a knight andlady under a coverlet with shield and cusped surround. In the vestry a marble wall plaque to Thomas Hatcher, d.1714, in the form of a fluted Doric aedicule with cartouche of arms, urns and cherub corbel. In the chancel on the north wall a C15 cope, red velvet, re-used as an altar frontal, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, angels and double headed eagles.
