ALLERTON ROAD, L18 Church of Saint Barnabas

Church. 1900-14. J. F. Doyle. Brick with random terracotta blocks and stone dressings, slate roof. Nave with aisles under lean-to roofs, west tower, transepts, chancel and south chapel. 4-bay nave has 4 centred heads to 3-light clerestory windows and architraves to 3-light aisle window. Tower has angle buttresses with canted inner angles; west entrance; 3-light west window; paired bell openings have tracery quatrefoils and louvres above; Cornice and arcaded embattled parapet. 2 porches to south have embattled parapets, segmental-headed doors with pointed fanlights and carving to spandrels. Transepts have 5-light windows. Chancel 5-light and chapel 3-light windows. Vestry to north east gable, with windows of 2 and 3 lights. Interior is stone faced, 5-bay nave arcade has angels carved in spandrels. Wallpiers to arch-braced collar roof. 3-bay arcade between chancel and chapel. Canopied reredos, North organ loft.
