CASTLE STREET 1. 5231 (South End) Portchester Church of St Mary SU 6204 11/200 18.10.55. GV [ {2.}] Built circa 1133 inside the walls of the Roman fort when Henry I founded a small priory of Augustinian Canons who moved to Southwick soon afterwards. Restored in 171() by Queen Anne's Bounty and again in 1888. Originally cruciform, south transept now missing. Short tower at crossing with pyramidal roof. Exterior rendered. Old tiled roof. Aiseless nave with 4 round arched recessed Norman windows, Transept has 1 window with another above. Norman west window tanked by round arched Jenels filled with design of quatrefoils within circles. Fine Norman west doorway or 3 {orders.} {Inside,} {Arm} of Elizabeth I and Queen Anne (whose body rested in the Church in {17ll)).} {Arcading} round {Tart} of {walls,} Squint in north wall near chancel {arch.} {Portchester Castle form} a {group} {with .} {jilt"a} {Church the Churchyard walls, the} {Ia#p} {in the +hgrqhyard and e ychg++e. +} {"}
