Church. 1860-63. By John Douglas for Lord Delamere. Snecked red
sandstone with dressings of red sandstone ashlar and grey slate roof.
Decorated Gothic style. Nave with side aisles, chancel, south-western
tower, north-eastern vestry. Tower: three stages with spire.
Slightly set back angle buttresses with off-sets. South face.
Two-light ground floor window with cusped lights, chamfered surround
and relieving arch over. To left hand side in the angles to either
side of the buttress are canted walls to the staircase turret. String
course dividing stages with single lancet to second stage with
casement moulding to underside of hood mould, which has floral label
stops. Two-light belfry openings above with louvres and cusped
lancets with trefoils to apexes and continuous hood moulds with
figure-head label stops. Columns between windows with crocketed
capital and similar larger columns to corners. Corbel table above
this immediately below spire which is octagonal and broached with
lucarnes to the main faces and a wrought iron cross as finial. West
face similar save that it has a wrought iron open clock face at the
level of the belfry openings. East face similar save for absence of
staircase turret. Nave: south front; tower at left, four bays to
right of this have 2-light windows with ovolo moulded surrounds.
Clerestorey windows also of two lights have columns with crocket
capitals to central mullions. North side similar, save for gabled
porch at right having arched doorway with hood mould and chamfered
reveals. Roundel above containing bust in relief of Jesus in act of
benediction. Clasping buttresses to the corners of the porch with
off-sets and single-light cusped windows to the sides of the porch.
Vestry at left has clasping buttresses with off sets, a triple lancet
with continuous hood mould and floral end-stops and a rose window to
the gable with hood mould and figurehead label stops. Chimney stack
rising from centre of gable with two flues. Chancel: north sides
obscured at right by vestry and with one 2-light window to left with
cusped lights and quatrefoil above continuous hood mould and floral
lable stops. South face has two similar windows. East face: Central
window of 4 cusped lights with tracery above two trefoils and a
quatrefoil to the apex. Quatrefoil to the apex of the gable and a
cross above at summit with ashlar kneelers and coping.
Interior: nave of 5 bays has round shafts to aisle arcades with
Decorated capitals. Ashlar voussoirs to arches which have double
rebates. Roundels above between arches. Aisle clerestory windows
have splayed window surrounds with cambered heads. Ashlar corbels
supporting wall posts of trusses which are of scissor beam
construction. Chancel has stone panelling at east end including
alabaster model of the Last Supper.
