12/11 Church of St. Mark & 6.2.62 St. Luke


Church. Cll, with C16 South Porch and C19 North Transept datestone 1877. Flint with stone dressings, rendered on west and south, tiled roof with gable parapets. Nave, chancel, south porch and north transept. South Elevation: large corner buttress to west, gabled south porch with moulded stone door surround under brick relieving arch. 2 semi-circular headed windows to nave and 2 to chancel. South door with elaborately carved Norman doorway with half columns, the left with cushion cap and right with leaf cap. The jambs and arch have leaf, chevron and roll mould ornaments. North Elevation: Blocked 2 centred arched north doorway and one semi-circular headed window to nave. West Elevation: 3 semi-circular headed windows, the centre being taller. Interior: 2 bay chancel with timber roof, but divided on walls by carved bases for roof vaulting, vault ribs set on pilasters with fluted and cushion caps at centre. Bulls head corbel and grotesque head corbel at east end. Vault ribs have beak head ornament. Aumbry in north wall, piscina and sediluim or easter tomb to south. Depressed chancel arch with recessed arches of ball flower, chevron and beak head ornaments, fluted and grotesque capitals to columns. Font said to be Saxon, tub with Romanesque style ornament of Ionic colonade encompassing 12 figures, roped top and plain leaf base. B.O.E. Berkshire p.75, V.C.H, Berkshire Vol.iv page 160.
