Details

MOULTON C.P. CHURCH STREET SJ 66 NE 5/75 Church of St Stephen - GV II Church, 1876-7. By John Douglas. Snecked yellow sandstone with red sandstone ashlar dressings, green slate roof with lead spire. Late Victorian Gothic. Nave and chancel with north-eastern transept, south-eastern vestry and south-western porch. Nave: South front; six bays with battened buttress at extreme left. Gabled porch to second bay from left. Central pointed arch with chamfered reveals of red sandstone ashlar and hood mould continuing as string course. Cusped lancet to gable also with red sandstone ashlar surround as have all the openings. The left and right hand returns each have quatrefoil openings and battered buttresses which are flush with the gabled front. Two-light window to left of this with hood mould. To the right are a series of three loosely perpendicular windows each having three cusped lancets with quatrefoils above and hood moulds. Buttresses between each window with single offset to top. To right of this is the lean-to vestry with a 4-light mullioned window with central King-mullion; doorway to the left-hand return with chamfered reveal, hood mould and foliate end stops. Single lancet to right hand reveal. Vestry chimneystack at far right has buttresses to west and south sides both dying via offsets, that to south being crowned by a gablet. Steeple to west end of ridge with hipped lower section of roof of green slate leaded louvred opening above this and splay-footed spire above that with weather vane to top. North front: battered buttress to far right. Single cusped lancet to left of this and buttress to left of that dying via an offset. Four windows to left of this with string course at the level of their sills and a continuous hood mould with casement moulding. The three windows to the right are cusped lancets and that to the left of the 3-light loosely perpendicular format seen on the south front. Transept to left of this with three-light window of cusped lancets. 2 trefoils above and bullseye to apex with hood mould and figurehead label stops. West front: two lancets with continuous hood mould and cusped lancet to gable. Chancel: north and south fronts both have 2-light windows of cusped lights with quatrefoils to apexes and hood moulds with figurehead label-stops. East end: central three-light window with quatrefoils above and cinquefoil to apex and hood mould with figurehead label stops. Lancet to gable. Interior: Red vitreous bricks to the lower walls and below bricks above sill level. Splayed reveals to the windows. Red sandstone ashlar corbels supporting six trusses which have arched braces connecting to the principals and collars which bear crown posts. Chancel arch of ashlar with chamfered reveals and ovolo mouldings. Barrel roof to chancel. Sedilia to eastern end of south wall. Two brass wall tablets to either side of the east window with the Credo and Lords Prayer at left and Ten commandments to right.
