49/1063 Nos. 7-12 (consecutive) (St. John's - House) G.V. II

Office building. 1870s. A. Waterhouse for Pearl Assurance. Stone with granite ground floor, slate roof. 3 storeys with attics, 5 bays to St. John's Lane, octagonal corner tower and 3 bays to Tryon Street. Ground floor has round-arched openings with C20 shop fronts with original glazing bars over. Cornice has entrance with cusped round-arched head and mosaic tympanum, flanking shafts with capitals. Round- headed entrance to left and traceried round-headed window to right. Pierced parapet with pinnacles and central traceried gable. 1st and 2nd floor paired sashed windows without glazing bars with strings and carved panels between floors. Corner stair window. Corbelled frieze with tracery, and cornice over. 4 dormers with tripartite sashed windows. Tracery in gables. Top stage of tower has windows of 2 round-headed lights under round-headed relieving arch pierced by a roundel. Panelled parapet with lettering "PEARL" on each face. Slate spire with lead cupola. End bay has round corner turret with moulded base dying into wall, Octagonal top has gallery with pierced balcony and segmental arches with windows behind, small spire with lead finial. Tryon Street facade similar but with 2 tiers of windows in dormers and crocketed finials over. 5 panelled stacks.
