9/81 STOWE SCHOOL The Congreve Monument

25.9.51 I

Circa 1737 perhaps by Kent. Small stone obelisk with a trophy of comic masks and surmounted by a monkey supposed to be holding a mirror. Erected by Lord Cobham as a memorial to his friend Congreve, the playwright. Stands on a small island in the Octagon Lake.
