Details

SJ 80 SW ALBRIGHTON C.P. HIGH STREET (north side) 6/18 Churchyard Cross about 5m G.V. south of the south porch of the Church of St. Mary Magdalene

II*

Churchyard Cross. C14 or C15 base with early C20 repaired shaft and head. Sandstone. Octagonal tapering shaft with foliated cross head in socket stone on a 4 stepped square plinth. The bottom 2 steps are very worn and are obviously original, the top 2 are C20 replacements; the upper edge of the socket stone is carved with cable moulding and has faces(?) to its corners. Only the bottom metre of the shaft is original, the remainder and the cross head being an early C20 restoration. In late C19 the bottom of the shaft (the original part still remaining) served as the pedestal for a sundial. The cable moulding on the socket stone can be compared with that on the cross at the Church of St. Cuthbert, Donington (q.v.) T.S.A.S. XI 2nd Series (1899) p.98.
