Railway bridge carrying former Liverpool to Manchester railway over River Irwell. 1830, by George Stephenson; slightly altered. Cushion-rusticated sandstone ashlar. Two segmental arches with radiating run-out voussoirs, a central cut-water, pilaster strips to this and to the east end, a plain dressed cornice, and a parapet with flat coping. History: with the former Liverpool Road Station to the east (q.v.), to which it is linked by a rebuilt viaduct over Water Street (q.v.), an integral element of the eastern terminus of the world's first passenger railway line. Forms part of group of railway structures, which also includes the railway bridge and viaduct immediately to the south (q.v.), and the later viaduct leading to the former Lower Byrom Street Warehouse (q.v.).
