SHACKLEWELL ROW E8 (East side) Church of Saint Barnabas

Mission church, 1910-11 by Professor Sir Charles Reilly, decorated by him in 1935-6. Stock brick, with concrete vaults on expanded steel reinforcement covered in asphalt. Wide three-bay nave with narrow passage aisles, baptistery in arched recess at (liturgical) west end. Screen divides nave from chancel, which otherwise is continuous and has narrow transepts. Apse with three-bay ambulatory. South transept houses organ loft with open timber balustrade; behind this a projecting choir vestry.

All windows are square leaded lights. Screen, with elaborate iron gates presented in 1915, completed as Reilly intended in 1935-6 and figures added to the design of Tyson Smith in memory of the Denby family. Timber altar rails to raised altar, choir stalls and sanctuary chairs by Reilly, font. Side altar with marble surround.
