SO 79 NE BADGER C.P. BADGER

7/54 Churchyard Cross about 5m south-east of the - chancel of the Church of St. Giles G.V. II*

Cross. Medieval, probably C14 or C15. Sandstone. Shaft and socket stone. The shaft is approximately 4m high, very weathered and badly split down the middle; at the top it broadens out for the cross head; the square socket stone is plain with chamfered corners. The cross head, which is said to have had a Crucifixion on one side and 2 saints on the other, was removed in late C19 as it had become unsafe; its present whereabouts is unknown. It is also traditionally said that the cross once stood in the road. Cranage, Vol.111 p.174.
