GV II

Parish church. 1843-4. W Hayley. Coursed and squared rubble in small blocks with slate roof. PLAN: west tower with spire, nave with 2 aisles and clerestorey, chancel. Perpendicular style. EXTERIOR: 3-stage west tower with wide west doorway, tall 3-light window with transom over, and blind traceried arcading with central roundel (intended for clock?) below tall paired bell chamber lights in upper stage. Stepped parapet with pinnacles at angles and centre. Spire with lucarnes. Doorways in west of aisles, each in moulded arch beneath squared hoodmould, and with rose window above. Aisles divided by buttresses into 6 bays, each with 2-light window. Similar windows in clerestorey. Short integral chancel has lancet windows with transoms, and wide 4-light east window divided by transom. Octagonal buttresses form pinnacles at angles. INTERIOR: unusually consistent detailing in Perpendicular style: nave arcade of 5 bays with octagonal shafts carrying chamfered arches, the arcade continuing into the chancel with organ chamber to north and vestry to south. Western gallery with ogee traceried panels, screened off with part-glazed panels in similar style below. Curved principal and collar roof with ogee tracery filling the spandrels. Low stone chancel screen with ogee traceried panelling and integral pulpit. Similar ogee panelling as continuous band across chancel, stressed as reredos to altar with mosaic infill, and as sedilia to north and south. Pictorial stained glass in east window, 'Suffer the little children', dated 1920. Painted stencil work to eastern bay of chancel roof.
