55/176 Victoria Building, Liverpool University 14.3.75 G.V. II

Main University building, 1887-92. A. Waterhouse. Common brick with red brick and terracotta dressings, slate roof. 3 storeys with attics, 13 bays, 5 bays to Ashton Street. A symmetrical facade has battered stone base and red brick bands; polygonal pilasters end in pinnacles above balustrade. Varied fenestration. Ground floor has paired windows with segmental relieving arches. 1st floor has cross windows. 2nd floor has windows of 3 cusped lights in blind arcading. 1st bay has 2-storey oriel and gable; gables in other bays alternate with gabled dormers. Small louvre on ridge has mullioned and transomed openings. 9th bay has tower with arched entrance and gable with oriel over. Tripartite windows, lower one has flanking date shields: 1837 and 1857. 1st stage, has Royal Arms and mosaic panel bearing inscription, machicolation above. Top stage has 4-face clock. Polygonal angle buttresses become panelled pinnacles with lead spirelets. Lead spine with 2 tiers of lucarnes. 10th bay has staircase window of lancets with gable over. End bays curve round behind octagonal tower with paired lancets, balustrade and 2-light openings to recessed round upper stage; tiled spire has lead band with lucarnes. Ashton Street-facade continues main facade treatment. C20 steelframe attached to main entrance.
