GRINTON GRINTON SE 09 NW 16/33 Grinton Lodge - II Former shooting lodge, now a Youth Hostel. c1800, much altered. For James Fenten. Pebble-dashed rubble, stone slate roof. Buildings of 1, 2 and 3 storeys around a courtyard. Ashlar sandstone surrounds to openings, classical and Gothick motifs, castellated rooflines. East front: 2 storeys; canted bay of 3 windows on each floor, then 3 first floor windows with round-headed openings and straight-headed sashes with glazing bars, and 3-storey tower to right with stepped diagonal buttresses. South elevation of 2 storeys, 9 irregular first floor windows. On north, single storey range with three 2-light flat-faced mullion windows with lintels carved with hood-mould. The approach is from the west through a carriage entrance with segmental-arched head. Inside courtyard, opposite carriage entrance is main baronial-style doorway in single-storey porch. South range may have been coach houses and stables. Interior: commmon room in canted bay with Adam style fireplace. The building is a prominent feature in the landscape.
