GV II* (STAR)

House. Late C.14 or early C.15, later C.15, C.16, early C.17, late C.18; 1827-8 by Richard Carver for General Slade; and late C.19. Rubble with some render, freestone dressing; tile and fishscale roofs. Irregular plan: late C.14 or early C.15 open hall facing east (now 2 storeys with attic and 4 1st-floor windows); to its left, later C.15 3-bay addition (now 2 storeys with attic), to the right C.18 3-bay addition of 2 storeys and attic, 2 bays deep; 2-storey C.16 addition to rear of left-hand C.15 block; 3-storey C.17 addition to rear of central hall; C.19 addition to rear of C.18 block and in free Gothic style. Entrance (east) elevation; panelled door in gabled Gothic porch. Central and right-hand blocks have sashes with glazing bars, some with margin-lights; to 1st floor of central block three 2-light leaded iron casements, two with stone mullions; these windows all in dressed stone quoined surrounds with hoodmoulds; four flat-roofed casement domers; tra- ces of blocked former windows. Left-hand block: 2-light stone mullioned window with cusped lights and iron saddle and stanchion bars to ground floor right; above it a flat-arched, small-pane, 3-light window; a blocked window to each floor of left bay. Roof has coped verges with bases for finials, 2 with iron finials inscribed: "A.S." and "T.B 1703" (previous list description); arcaded wooden bellcote to C.19 addition with pyramidal lead roof and iron finial inscribed, "1862" (previous list description). Brick and ashlar stacks with moulded freestone caps, one a C.17 addition original and having triple diagonally-set flues. Rear: features of note include a 3-light, hollow-moulded mullion window to each floor on right; a moulded cross-window to centre in later Gothick storeyed porch and another with hoodmould to left (C.17) bay.

Interior: the C.16 south-west block has a basket-arched doorway on ground floor, coffered ceiling with large-scantling beams with ogee-moulded arrises, in the first floor room a C.17 stone fireplace and moulded panelling with cornice, C.18 panelled doors. C.17 part has moulded panelling to 1st-floor room with fine fireplace surround having fluted Ionic pilasters, over-mantel panels and elaborate cornices; heavily-moulded coffered ceiling. Bathroom next to this room has late-C.19 bath with upright "shower" unit. In. C15 left-hand block, 3 wooden spiral stairs from 1st floor to attic, one rising against the former end-wall of the open hall which has a window with wood mullions and stanchions; in the attic principal rafter roof trusses. The hall itself has a later C.16 or early C.17 1st-floor corner fireplace and panelling in bathroom which has late C.19 bath with lid; on the attic floor fine medieval roof with 6 closely-spaced, moulded, arch-braced trusses with short V struts, 2 tiers of Chamfered and cusped arched windbraces and moulded butt purlins. The stair is C.18, with turned balusters. The C.18 part has good fireplaces and in the north-east room full-height pilasters and elaborate frieze and cornice.

Country house. Medieval origin. C18 work and additions and alterations in 1827-8 by Richard Carver for Slade family, also late C19 additions. Rubble with some render, freestone dressings, tile and fishscale tile roofs, coped verges with bases for finials, 2 with iron pennants inscribed:- "A.S." and "T.B. 1703", arcaded wooden bellcote with a pyramidal lead roof with iron pennant inscribed:- "1862", some brick and some ashlar stacks with moulded freestone caps. Irregular plan; C19 portions in free Gothic style. Entrance frontage of 2 storeys and attic, 2:4:3 bays; sash windows with glazing bars, some with marginal lights; 4 windows on first floor with iron casements and leaded lights, 2 with stone dividing mullions; C16 two-light stone-mullioned window to left bay on ground floor, each light with a cusped head, iron saddle and stanchion bars; 4 box dormers with casements to attic; majority of windows in dressed stone surrounds with labels. Door opening in a single storey Gothick porch, 4-centred arch door opening, panelled door. This elevation with traces of early blocked windows. Interior with panelled doors; 3 C18 chimneypieces; panelled room; ornamental plasterwork; further lesser features; arch braced roof with windbraces.
