SD 70 NE CHURCH GREEN 7/94 Church of St Mary 29.7.66 and St Bartholomew - I

C14, C15, C17 and C19. Chancel arch of Decorated period. 2-bay nave probably late Perpendicular: arcades with 4 broad shafts and 4 broad diagonal hollows, big bosses to renewed roof end clerestory windows with uncusped arches to the lights. North transept with some mediaeval masonry. Former south transept demonlished on con- struction of south aisle by J M and H Taylor in 1870-73, when most of the exterior was designed. Chancel of 1817. Tower probably C15, but dated '1665', when it was probably merely restored. Vestry of 1903. Seats at west end of nave, bearing panels some with inscription and date '1665', others from pulpit of 1606. Stained glass window in south aisle by Kempe, 1906. Alabaster slab with effegies of James de Radcliffe and wife, of early C16, under altar (VCH). (Pevsner, South Lancashire.)
