4/5 Gateway and churchyard wall on east and south sides of St Bartholomew's Churchyard

Gateway and churchyard wall. 1855 by J L Pearson. Rock-faced sandstone with smooth ashlar dressings. Wrought-iron railings. Chamfered plinth, quoins. East gateway has buttresses flanking a segmental-pointed arch with double-chamfered outer orders, a hollow-chamfered inner order and double- chamfered jambs, beneath gabled coping with small central trefoiled gablet for finial (missing at time of resurvey, April 1987). C20 oak gates with iron strap hinges and spiked top. Walls stepped down to either side have 5 piers to left, 7 piers to right (including end piers), with chamfered coping, and iron railings with plain spiked bars and plain square-section principals. Adjoining wall on south side of churchyard, approximately 25 metres long, has plinth and chamfered coping.
