SU 8284-8384 HURLEY HIGH STREET (west side)

17/5 Dovecote in the grounds of The Tithe Barn, about 9 metres south 25.3.55 of the house

Dovecote, now disused. Medieval. Chalk and flint, with later brickwork. Old tile conical roof with open dormer above eaves and open turret at top. 4 buttresses, each of 2 offsets and with a brick base. Small plank entrance door on east with stone lintel and pointed relieving arch, and approached by 6 stone rubble steps. Interior: a revolving ladder from a central newel post, gives access to nesting boxes which are nearly continuous within the walls, The dovecote originally belonged to Hurley Priory.
