31.10.66 Church of Saint George
GV I
Former parish church, now redundant. C14 and C15, but with earlier origins.
Mixture of cobblestones, ironstone and limestone, with ashlar dressing. E
wall and other repairs of red brick. Parts rendered. Slate roofs. Chancel,
nave, N and S aisles, N and S porches, W tower. Chancel: C14 rebuilding,
shortened C19. 3-light C19 E window in C15 style. C15 3-light 4-centred N and
S windows. Blocked C14 pointed-arched S doorway. Pointed chancel arch.
Nave: C13 origins. C14 pointed-arched 2-bay arcades to NE and SE. W of porch
to both N and S sides is C15 3-light 4-centred window. C15 clerestory, each
side with 3 2-light square-headed windows. N and S doorways both C14. N
aisle: C14, with pointed 2-light E window and C15 2-light N windows with
square head. S aisle: C14 Pointed 2-light E window with flowing tracery. S
elevation has C15 3-light window and small single light. N and S porches:
both C15 and in similar style. Shallow gable. Pointed archway under square
head. S porch retains 2-light W window, that to N porch blocked. W tower:
C14. 2-stages with angle buttresses. 2-light pointed arched window to each
side of bell-stage. Single-light window to W ground stage. Tower and nave
have embattled parapets. Interior: C15 octagonal font with carved panels.
Late C12 pillar piscina reset in N aisle. Also in N aisle fragment of C14
wall painting showing king with sceptre and another man, both facing E.
Fragments of medieval glass in chancel S window and clerestory S window.
Chancel retains C15 pews, with carved poppyheads and lion and bear finials.
C19 roofs. Rood staircase to nave NE angle.
