lfi75-77. Alfred Waterhouse architect. Difficult corner site, Gothic style.
6 bay rain hall to Prospect Street, 2 stage tower to south-west (corner) angle
and gable end front to south. Red brick with stone capped plinth and inner
window reveals. Grey blue decoration (to south front). Banded tile roof.
West front: paired lancets with separating buttresses (containing tumbled brickwork),
the 2 right hand bays have lower windows with herring bone and decorative infill.
Corbelled brick eaves cornice in 2 layers. Small 2 bay projection to north.
Tower has chamfered corners, 2 tall stages and a decorative upper stage; capped
by tall hipped roof with weathervane. South front: stepped triple lancet with
over arch and decorative infill below; central gabled porch with flanking lean-to
annexes. Punched lozenges in gable and in kneeler to right. The interior
has been well maintained. Low brick wall angled to corner site fronts South
Street, stone chamfered capping. This building is included as a good example
of Waterhouse's use of materials with brick, stone and roof tiles of different
colours.
