Slab monument. c1857 by George Godwin. Brown millstone grit on grey granite plinth. Tall, rough-hewn rectangular slab, set on end, with simple inscription on short square plinth. A uniquely plain and massive design for its date. Britton was the most distinguished medieval antiquary of the early C19 and pioneered study of English cathedrals on which he published many books. Godwin was an architect and editor of the foremost C19 architectural journal The Builder.
