Details

STOKEINTEIGNHEAD STOKE ROAD (west side), SX 9070-9170 Stokeinteignhead 17/406 Pair of cottages about 25 metres - north-west of Higher Farm

GV II

2 cottages, probably one build. Late C17 origins, the left end remodelled in the C18. Rendered cob and stone rubble; slate roof, gabled at left end, hipped at right end; projecting left end stack, 2 rear lateral stacks. Plan: Single depth main range, 3 rooms wide with a passage to left of centre with a stair to the rear, access to the stair from the left hand room. A fourth room, a narrow unheated service room, at the right end. Probably an adaptation or remodelling of a C17 3 room and passage plan, lower end to the left. There is a thick cross wall between the 2 large right hand rooms and there may have been some rebuilding or addition at the right end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3:2 window front (first floor window right blind), the left hand cottage 3 window wide with a central C19 or C20 plank front door with a horizontal porch hood with a decorated canopy. C19 or C20 plank front door to the right hand cottage at the extreme right. C19 or C20 2 and 3 light timber casement windows with glazing bars except one which is a late C20 replacement. Interior: The left hand room has a C17 chamfered scroll-stopped crossbeam. The C18 stair that rises in the rear right corner has a winder with a very wide straight flight (above the passage). The rear lateral stack of the centre room is partly concealed by the left hand partition of the room; there seems to be some evidence of a plank and muntin screen, covered by wallpaper, on the right hand wall. C18 2-panel doors and one door with fielded panels survive in the left hand cottage. The right hand cottage interior is plain, with no exposed carpentry. A winder stair with a straight flight rises from within the service room at the right end. Roof: Right hand end only inspected. A-frames. Group value with Higher Farm.
