Built in 1881 by E S Prior for Sir Hugh and Lady Juliana Hume-Campbell, to replace
an earlier house on the site, destroyed by fire. An early example of Queen Anne -
Early Georgian revival. Drawing exhibited Royal Academy 1882. Two storeys and
attic. L-shaped house with Southern service extensions and a two-storey projecting
diagonal porch set in the angle, which presages Prior's later development of the
"butterfly" plan, also implied by the one-storey and attic end wings. Red brick,
very high quality work with gauged brick window arches, some rusticated into
voussoirs; and some framing of windows in short classical order with little shaped
gables over in Carolean style. High pitched hipped swept tiled roofs with tall
gabled dormers. Modillion eaves cornice with the modillions set diagonally in the
porch bay. Garden front of three, three and three windows, half-octagonal outer
bays. Later C18 style plastered rooms inside.
