HARBOTTLE HOLYSTONE NT 90 SE 21/76 The Lady's Well 21/10/53 GV I

Well or water tank, cross and statue. Tank possibly Roman, reconstructed 1788, statue possibly C15 but placed here 1788, cross late C19.

Roman water tank c. 15 x 10 yards given new low edging walls in 1788 at which time a statue to represent St. Paulinus was brought from Alnwick Castle and placed in centre of tank.

In late C19 the statue was moved to the south end of the tank and replaced by a Celtic-style wheel-head cross.

Reputed, on doubtful grounds, to be the scene of mass conversions by Paulinus on Easter Day A.D. 627 but considered more likely to have been a preaching station of St. Ninian.
