KIDSGROVE C.P. MACCLESFIELD CANAL SJ 85 NW

1/59 Red Bull Aqueduct - II

Aqueduct. Dated 1828. Red brick (English bond) with stone parapet string and coping. Segmental arch spanning the road with rusticated ashlar surround. The abutments sweep forward and are terminated at parapet level by wide pilaster buttresses; they then slope down and finally terminate in squat piers with pyramidal caps. Above the arch is a stone panel bearing the inscription "RED BULL / AQUEDUCT / MDCCCXXVIII". The Macclesfield Canal was opened in 1831;the engineer was William Crosley.
